{Disarmed} Android 12.1: Early build shows optimizations for foldables
The xda-developers have now published an in-depth look at an early version of Android 12.1 that contains numerous optimizations by Google for foldable phones. The mid-cycle update is codenamed "Snowcone v2" and since Android 12 also uses the codename "Snowcone", it can be assumed that the 12.1 update will bring minor changes for normal phones, while foldable phones will see most of the changes will.
Android 12.1's lock screen takes a two-part approach with notifications, battery info, and status on the right, while the left is reserved for the time and date. The unlock icon is in the middle between the two windows and appears to be quite large, which makes it easy to unlock the screen with a swipe gesture. If you have stored a PIN or a password, it will appear on the page to which you swiped when you unlocked the screen.

A main feature of Android 12.1 seems to be the taskbar, which has also been seen in previous leaks. It enables users to dock up to five apps similar to a desktop interface, so that they can be started quickly and you can switch between them with a tap of your finger. The taskbar is natively integrated into the multitasking and split-screen functions of Android and offers the option of switching to split-screen mode via drag & drop. You can also touch and hold the taskbar to hide it.

First-party apps and UI elements now use both sides of the display to present information and submenus. The notification bar is split into two areas, with a separate tab on the right for incoming notifications, while the quick toggles remain on the left.

The split-screen mode has a new look with a larger dividing line that is now dark gray instead of black. There are also app pairs with which you can open two apps at the same time side by side using a single icon. You can swap the position of the two apps by double-tapping the dividing line. The layout of the recent apps has also changed, with the final app being displayed in a larger window.

There's also the ability to open notifications right in the split screen, new boot animations, and an open source themed engine that will be exclusive to Android 12 but supposedly gets a wider release with the 12.1 update.
