Apple s AirPods 3: once defective, all that s left is junk
Apple recently surprised everyone with the announcement that it would enable customers to repair their iPhones themselves - in a very exemplary manner and in the spirit of sustainability. The new AirPods 3 are completely different, here Apple deserves more criticism than applause.
The repair professionals from iFixit grabbed the new 3rd generation AirPods and the brand new Beats Fit Pro, which are not yet available in this country. So far, AirPods were simply not considered to be repairable, has this assessment changed with the new models?
AirPods 3 cannot be repaired
Unfortunately not, because after the professional dismantling there is a frightening 0 out of 10 possible points on the repair scale of iFixit. Even the new headphones simply cannot be repaired. Because if you want to go inside, the housing of the earphones is inevitably destroyed. This means that both a battery exchange and further repair work are ruled out. In short: once defective, all that's left is scrap:
Incidentally, this annoying fact does not only apply to normal users, Apple itself does not improve any AirPods either. Instead, customers simply receive new earphones when service is required. The same applies to the "battery replacement" propagated by Apple. Even then there is a completely new AirPod, because the battery cannot be replaced at all. Cost point: 55 euros per individual earphone, just as much for the battery of the charging case. If the worst comes to the worst, you will often get away with a new purchase, at least if the AirPods 3 continue to fall in price. Currently you still have to pay over 180 euros in free trade.
In the video , Apple reveals the new features of the AirPods 3:
Proper recycling is a must at Apple
Worth mentioning: The actual battery of the AirPods 3 is at least no longer soldered, but only plugged in . It just doesn't help if you can't open the case without wounds. For professional recycling, the AirPods 3 should also be handed in to Apple in the future, otherwise the junk will also become an environmental problem.
With the iPhone, Apple is now taking a different approach. In the future, one would like to give expert users the opportunity to repair their iPhones themselves if necessary. For this, Apple will guarantee access to spare parts and instructions. The first will be the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 13 in the USA from the beginning of 2022.
