Apple breaks promises: New Super Mac already beaten
During the presentation, Apple was still cocky and promised incredible graphics performance for the Mac Studio, and the aluminum cube should even be able to compete with an Nvidia RTX 3090. Now it comes out: Apple breaks its promise.
Apple's M1 Ultra isn't faster than an Nvidia RTX 3090 after all
Don't get us wrong, the new M1 Ultra in the Mac Studio is an absolute stunner. No other processor develops such high performance in terms of low power consumption. All testers are currently in agreement on this point, but Apple is breaking a promise that was previously made.
And the M1 Ultra should actually beat the "highest independent GPU" - meaning the Nvidia RTX 3090. As the colleagues from "The Verge" found out in their test, this is not true. In the graphics benchmark (Geekbench 5), the M1 Ultra is clearly defeated by said Nvidia, which was easily twice as fast (source: The Verge). How can this be?
Well, Apple seems to have been pretty creative in its own performance assessment. In the small print, the manufacturer spoke of a so-called "relative performance" . The M1 Ultra actually beats the RTX 3090, but only at a certain level of performance.
Still has fast graphics, Apple's Mac Studio, but not the fastest GPU:
Apple makes the rules itself
Apple skilfully omits the whole picture and thus hides the truth in the end. "The Verge" sums it up well, using an understandable metaphor:
"But it seems Apple just isn't showing the full potential of the competitor it's chasing right now. That's a bit like arguing that an electric car has a better engine because it uses significantly less fuel than a Lamborghini at a speed of 80mph - without mentioning that a Lamborghini will still go twice as fast can."
Bottom line: While the M1 Ultra is fast and efficient, Nvidia is even faster with the RTX 3090, if not more economical than Apple. A not entirely unimportant circumstance that Apple simply sweeps under the carpet. Of course you can also win that way, provided you define the rules yourself.
